2010
We are a vibrant hard working branch led by a commited Chairman, Mr Horace Cross. The local communities have always been so supportive of The Poppy Appeal so it is little wonder that so much is raised by so few. This is due to the loyalty and persverance of the volunteers who come forward every year to stand on cold corners, or outside our supermarkets.
Others fund raise, some call at homes, and shops and clubs display the poppy trays. All this takes organising and if it wasn't for Horace we would surely not do so well. Without his cordinating abilities we would be in a sorry muddle.
As this year (2010) ends we have already raised in excess of £25,000 - no mean feat for a market town of 8.5 thousand persons.
But the highlight for the Legion is the increasing presence of young people taking part , so we are confident that here in Downham Market that the Poppy Appeal, and the Remembrance Services will go from strength to strength. |

"Tom
Blanchflower who is 80 now, DIDN'T cycle to Paris this
year to raise funds, instead he went out for the 14days of poppy
selling in downham market, mostly outside Tescos and in Wales
Court area raising over £3000 which is 14% of our total to date.
Wonderful at his age.
So far the tally is in excess of £21,000. This is of course
a magnificent amount from our small town and the local villages
and the Royal British Legion are very grateful to all those
that donated to the poppy appeal." Pat Roberts |

"There
was a time when the money raised helped servicemen from the First
and Second World Wars, but in view of what has been happening in Afghanistan
and Iraq, the money is needed more than ever. We hear about the people
who give their lives out there and, of course, you feel for their families, but you don't hear about the ones who come back with severe
injuries. Their lives changed forever and they need our and they need
our support and that's why I say the Legion and Poppy Appeal are as
important now as they ever were - if not more so" Horace
Cross - Chairman
