The Downham Market
and District Royal British Legion and the Town Council headed up the
fund raising to refurbish the Town's war memorial this year.
Past history The war memorial it self is sited at the corner of London Road
and Church Road. Monies were raised by public subscription after WW1.
The memorial itself was made by Mr H.J. Long, a local memorial mason.
Unveiled 21 October 1921, 73 names from WW1, and 24 names from WW2
(including one female) are listed. One name plaque is attached to
on the wall at rear. The last enhancement occurred in 1968, when the
memorial was moved to its present site, and when road and traffic
improvements were made in the immediate area. More recently it was
the surrounding area that badly needed a revamp, to improve public
accessibility and to enhance it visually.
This year (2008) Funds were raised from the Town Council, Borough Council and The War
Memorial Trust and by public subscription managed by the DM & District
RBL. It had to be started and finished between Battle of Britain service
in September and Remembrance Events in November 2008. The contractors
were Giles Landscapes of Welney, and garden landscaper Jane Besser.
Remembrance
Parade and Service 2008 Approximately 450 people took part or
watched the Parade and Service on 9th November held at the War Memorial.
30 wreaths laid were laid and 36 crosses placed in the flower beds.
The planting scheme compliments the reds of "poppies" and of wreaths
from September to December. click on any
